Legacy reshapes Riftbound boosters and draft support
The January set changes booster composition, adds a draft fallback and standardizes the verb used when cards generate tokens.
Riftbound will open 2027 with Legacy in January, alongside a revised booster mix and changes aimed at draft play. From the sixth set onward, boosters lose one Common position, while cards that generate tokens will use Create instead of Play.
A different booster allocation
Legacy begins a continuing booster configuration. Starting with Set 6, a Common position is reassigned to a separate position reserved for a Legend or a Battlefield, with the two outcomes expected at approximately equal rates. That leaves six Common cards in Legacy boosters and later sets, compared with seven previously. The announcement frames this as an approach beginning with the sixth set, rather than a Legacy-only configuration.
Draft preparation becomes more explicit
Draft preparation is also becoming more explicit around Legacy. Riftbound had published drafting rules after Origins arrived, although earlier sets were not built specifically around drafting. Minions are intended as an available reserve, similar to Runes: players may add them when their drafted cards do not reach the required 25-card deck. Further design detail for Legacy is being held until nearer release.
Token wording gets a defined verb
Card wording receives a separate adjustment from Set 6. When a spell or ability produces a token, cards will use Create as the governing verb rather than Play. The announcement describes this as the most straightforward fix in the group, making it a defined rules-language change tied to the same set boundary as the booster revision.

Legacy is scheduled for January 2027 and is positioned as Riftbound’s opening release of the year. The announcement says more explanation of its design work will arrive closer to launch, particularly around drafting.
